Quantum mechanics is the most successful scientific theory ever produced. Almost 100 years of intense experimental testing has never found it to be in error. Most of todays technology relies on it. But quantum mechanics is deeply strange. It tells us that the behaviour of very small things is fundamentally different in character to the objects which inhabit the macroscopic scale of our experience. It stretches our imagination beyond the point where we can any longer visualise. The pictures we bring from our own experience often simply cannot be applied at the atomic scale. Mathematics appears to be our only reliable guide and we are forced to accept that nature’s imagination is in a deep sense far greater than man’s.

This is the first presentation in a new series of events and performances hosted by Florida, relating to ideas of opacity.

Andrew Jacobs is a mathematician who founded the Munich-based Institute for Enquring Minds – a pedagogy project for children and young adults offering extracurricular and one-on-one math tution on a pay-as-you-can basis. The model was loosely inspired by Dave Egger’s writing centre 826 Valencia in San Francisco. Andrew formerly worked as a quant in London and within academia in the UK and US. He studied at St Andrews University in Scotland and Cambridge, England.

  • Produktion dient keinem Nutzen
  • Rausch und Linie als nicht festgeschriebene Qualitäten

Ein Setting und Service von Florida
