Eine Buchpräsentation und eine Ausstellung zu möglichen Formen einer gemeinschaftlichen Kulturproduktion.
Vorgestellt wird die Neuauflage von Stephanie Ourslers Künstler*inbuch 5 Cuts, das im Original 1975 im Selbstverlag in Rom erschien und 2021 von Wirklichkeit Books neu aufgelegt wurde. Es ist der erste Titel der Reprint-Reihe Re:Re, die von der gleichnamigen Recherchegruppe herausgegeben wird. Das sind: Verena Buttmann, Johanna Klingler, Jonas von Lenthe und Max Stocklosa. Re:Re ist ein ergebnisoffenes Forschungsprojekt, das historisches Material untersucht und zum Anlass nimmt, um Formen des gemeinschaftlichen Produzierens auszutesten. Dabei geht es um das gemeinsame Lesen, Üben, Bauen und Lernen.
Stephanie Ourslers 5 Cuts umfasst eine Serie von Abbildungen in schwarz-weiß, die mit einem handschriftlichen Text der Künstlerin versehen sind. Bei den Bildern handelt es sich um Filmstills aus Stummfilmen, die Stephanie Oursler (*1938, Baltimore, USA, † 2018, Mailand, Italien) gefunden und mit ihren eigenen poetisch-autobiographischen Texten kombiniert hat. Stephanie Oursler war in unterschiedlichen feministischen Gruppen und Netzwerken der 1970er Jahre in Rom aktiv – so spiegelt sich auch in ihrem künstlerischen Vokabular eine für diesen Kontext typische Vorgehensweise: Politisches artikuliert sich in Form von persönlicher Erinnerung, Geschichte und Fiktion.
Daneben lädt die Ausstellung ein, sich mit den diversen Materialien auseinanderzusetzen, die sich im Laufe der Forschungstätigkeit von Re:Re angesammelt haben. Die kunstvermittelnde Tätigkeit der Filmemacherin Ulrike Ottinger in den 60er Jahren wird in Bezug gesetzt zu der Künstler*innenzeitschrift A.N.Y.P. (München/Berlin, 1989 – 1999) und der performativen Lyrik der Dichterin Hannah Weiner (1928 – 1997). Dabei geht es darum, Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen den unterschiedlichen historischen Praktiken herauszuarbeiten, um über vergangene und zukünftige Formen einer gemeinschaftlichen, emanzipativen und selbstorganisierten Kulturproduktion nachzudenken.

We will present the reprint of Stephanie Oursler’s artist book 5 Cuts, originally self-published in Rome in 1975 and re-issued by Wirklichkeit Books in 2021. It is the first title in the reprint series Re:Re, edited by Verena Buttmann, Johanna Klingler, Jonas von Lenthe and Max Stocklosa, a research group working under the same name. Re:Re is an open-ended research project that works through historical experience and takes it as a starting point to try out forms of collaborative production. We are concerned with reading, practicing, building and learning together.
Stephanie Oursler’s 5 Cuts comprises a series of images in black and white, accompanied by a handwritten text by the artist. The images are film stills from silent movies that Stephanie Oursler (b. 1938, Baltimore, USA, † 2018, Milan, Italy) found and arranged alongside her own poetic-autobiographical texts. Stephanie Oursler’s artistic vocabulary tells of her active participation in women’s groups and networks in Rome in the 1970s, in which political issues were addressed via a distinctive articulation between memory, history and fiction.
In addition, the exhibition invites visitors to engage with diverse material that has accumulated in the course of Re:Re’s research process: filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger’s activities concerning art mediation in the 1960s are being linked with the artists’ magazine A.N.Y.P. (Munich/Berlin, 1989 – 1999) and furthermore, with the performative poetry of the poet Hannah Weiner (1928 – 1997). Here, our aim is to identify commons between different historical practices in order to reflect on past and future forms of a collaborative, emancipative and self-organized cultural production.
The exhibition opening will feature an online talk with Suzanne Santoro. Suzanne Santoro is an artist and was a close friend of Stephanie Oursler. She was part of the collective and publishing house Rivolta Femminile, founded by Carla Lonzi in 1970. From 1976 to 1978, together with Stephanie Oursler and nine other women, she ran the exhibition space Cooperativa del Beato Angelico in Rome.
