FLORIDA Winter [retrospective]: AiR und Care
„We are all trying to keep it up, keep going, pulling through as if this is „normal“, as if this is ok. We haven’t been able to properly come together for a whole year. We are entering a third wave. We never know when things are gonna open and when they open a bit if they will close again, and how soon. Capitalism is pumping in the after hours land of the meta verses and digital gatherings in world with blurred time zones. NONE of this is normal. I’m having to remind myself that we are in a pandemic bc everyone’s eagerness to keep working, and overworking, perhaps as a ways not to acknowledge the grief of this pandemic, or perhaps for the fear of not having enough work later, is gaslighting me into thinking things are normal, business as usual; and it’s not. NONE of this is normal. We are in a pandemic. Never forget. Cut oneself some slack and try to chill.“

Artist in Residence-Programm:
Um die Räume und Ressourcen des FLORIDA auch während des Lockdowns zu teilen, haben wir drei Resident*innen eingeladen, bei uns zu arbeiten. Von Dezember bis Februar war die Performerin @nnast_antn aus Berlin da, im Moment ist Abeer Farhoud (siehe unten) bei uns und im kommenden Quartal wird die Kuratorin Claire Astier aus Marseille zu Gast sein. Da wir aus eigener Erfahrung wissen, dass Residenzprogramme oft in einer Form konzipiert sind, die weniger für die eingeladene*n Resident*in da ist, sondern bei der die Außenwirkung der Institution im Vordergrund steht, wollten wir dieses Verhältnis neu denken. In Austausch mit den drei Residentinnen haben wir deshalb die grundlegenden Parameter Zeit/Geld/Raum/Öffentlichkeit an den Bedarf der jeweiligen Künstlerin angepasst, um sie und ihre Arbeit bestmöglichst unterstützen und daraus für zukünftige Projekte und uns als Institutionsarbeiter*innen lernen zu können.
Care Online-Format:
Der zweite Hauptstrang unseres Winterprograms war ein Care Online-Format, ein safer Space für Künstler*innen in der Krise, das an drei unterschiedlichen Terminen stattfand. Mit dabei waren Clara Laila Abid Alsstar, Sisilia Akello-Okello, Patrycja Kowalska, Magdalena Emmerig, Paula Kohlmann, Lisa Jeschke, Dede Opela, Liane Klingler, Aiko Okamoto, Sara Stankovic, Tunay Önder, Donika Gawaz. Jeder Termin brachte sehr unterschiedliche Themen, Atmosphären und Dynamiken mit sich, aber von allen Teilnehmer*innen wurde eine allgemeine Erschöpfung artikuliert und verschiedene Strategien damit umzugehen. Wir möchten noch einmal allen unseren Gäst*innen danken für ihre Offenheit und ihr Vertrauen und freuen uns, nun mit ihnen gemeinsam Beiträge für das kommende FLORIDA Magazin zu entwickeln.
Beide Formate – die AiR und das Care Online-Format – hängen mit Fragen zusammen, die wir als FLORIDA auf verschiedenen Ebenen nun schon eine ganze Weile verfolgen: Wie können wir als freiberuflich und für wenig Geld arbeitende Künstler*innen in einem Münchner Kunstraum bestehende Bedingungen und Strukturen hinterfragen und verbessern, unter denen Künstler*innen und Kulturarbeiter*innen im Kunst- und Kulturbetrieb üblicherweise eingeladen werden? Wie können wir gegenseitig realistische und sinnvolle Erwartungen formulieren? Wie kann eine gute Betreuung und Kommunikation aussehen und eine faire Höhe und Art der Bezahlung? Wir wollen uns die Zeit nehmen und geben, die es braucht, um solidarischere Formen der Zusammenarbeit zu entwickeln. Diese Arbeit werden wir weiterhin fortführen. Artist in Residence Program:
In order to share the spaces and resources of FLORIDA also during the lockdown, we invited three residents to work with us. From December to February the performer @nnast_antn from Berlin was here, at the moment Abeer Farhoud (see below) is with us and in the next quarter the curator Claire Astier from Marseille will be our guest. As we know from our own experience that residency programs are often conceived in a form that is less there for the invited resident and more about the external impact of the institution, we wanted to rethink this relationship. In exchange with the three residents, we therefore adapted the basic parameters of time/money/space/publicity to the needs of the respective artist in order to support her and her work in the best possible way and to learn from this for future projects and for us as institutional workers.
Care Online Format:
The second main strand of our winter program was a three-date Care Online format, a safe space for artists in the crisis. The participants were Clara Laila Abid Alsstar, Sisilia Akello-Okello, Patrycja Kowalska, Magdalena Emmerig, Paula Kohlmann, Lisa Jeschke, Dede Opela, Liane Klingler, Aiko Okamoto, Sara Stankovic, Tunay Önder, Donika Gawaz. Each appointment brought very different themes, atmospheres and dynamics, but a general exhaustion was articulated by all participants and different strategies to deal with it. Once again, we would like to thank all of our guests for their openness and trust and look forward to working with them to develop contributions for the upcoming FLORIDA magazine.
Both formats – the AiR and the Care Online format – are related to questions that we as FLORIDA have been pursuing on different levels for quite a while now: How can we, as freelance artists working for little money in a Munich art space, question and improve existing conditions and structures under which artists and cultural workers are usually invited in the art and culture business. How can we mutually formulate realistic and reasonable expectations, how can good support and communication look like and a fair amount and way of compensation. We want to give ourselves the time it takes to develop more solidary forms of collaboration.
